Day 95

Okay so last night it rained and rained, so refreshing and over due. I didn’t sleep much at all between that and Jeremiah’s snoring. I felt bad I woke up all cranky and not wanting to do anything. He was showered and packed before I could even think about it. Anyway I got around eventually and had a freezing cold shower. We went to breakfast and the guests were so engrossed in some deep political scientifical conversation we had to inside at the bar and talked with Marianna. We really like Doris, finally a good Wwoofer and we have to leave. After a fairly satisfying last breakfast we cleaned our dirty old trailer. It actually wasn’t too bad except when I cleaned the headboard shelf thing. Those green lizards that play around in the curtains don’t always find their way out. A dead black shriveling corpse of one fell down while I was wiping things and I screamed and jumped off the bed. Luckily Jeremiah took it away for me and I felt better. So yeah the morning went fast. We said goodbye to Pignic and Solei was nowhere to be seen so that’s sad. Those are definitely my two favorite animals, oh I petted Dead Bird Peter as well. The drive to the airport was kind of nice but I got so nervous and scared about the moments to come. It always feels hotter at the airport, we checked in our luggage and I was a flustered emotional mess. I had to say goodbye to Jeremiah and he went through his gate. I stood in line to get screened for a good twenty minutes and had tears streaming down my face the whole time. I was so sad to leave my home here and to be alone, luckily I put my sunglasses on and no one noticed. So yeah didn’t have to wait long for that flight. It went quickly and easily. So I get to Honolulu and its so moist and muggy, I got a headache and still have it now. Anyway, before I get going on Honolulu, its evil, I hate, I’m never going back, despicable ugly city. Okay so I am a rat in a maze trying to get out of the durn airport and ask enough grumpy old security men to find my way to the city bus stop. Well unlike the wonderful big island of Hawai’i, the bus is not free, just one of the vast and important differences. So I have half an hour to go begging strangers because I cant get back in and break my twenty without getting screened again. I make a dollar and hope my meager offering will sound like a handful of quarters, it works. The bus is full and hot and the windows are hard to see through. We do go through this pretty cool looking Chinese part of Honolulu. So I have been on the bus for what feels like enough time and the old couple behind me says yeah this is the famous Waikiki beach. So I get there and lay out my blanket, its blue skies and white fluffy clouds. I saw my first rainbow in Hawai’i on the bus ride over, that was good. Anyway for what seems like good weather it is constantly sprinkling a little. I get in the water and its nice, but it’s chunky rocks on the bottom like the Rickreall creek sort of so I don’t stay in long. Well by the time I’ve been there forty five minutes I’m worried about getting back in time, which was silly but traveling alone makes me all rushed and scared. So I got some Subway and had a quick lunch. People kept starring at me really hard and unabashedly the whole time I ate at my little table. I was modestly dressed, eating a normal sandwich. I just don’t get it, is it because all the little jutting hipbone girls around here don’t eat and I looked crazy. Whatever the case when it wasn’t just the one cute Asian guy who blatantly starred at me first I started to get really pissed and uncomfortable and decided to wait for the bus. I waited on the wrong side for a bit, then went to the right side. No biggie, I put in all my change to get on but the bus drivers little receptacle counts change now apparently and he’s all “that’s not enough”. I told him all I had was fives and he said well you’ll have to put one in then, so I did and was mad. Some crazy homeless guy that got several “shutup!”s from fellow riders was on the bus all the way to the airport, I had no idea what he was saying but it was hilarious and sad. I also saw some guy peeing in the bushes in the middle of town in front of a busy street business area, the guy behind me saw it too, it was sort of funny. So I am lonely and feel like nothing is going right and I haven’t met too many nice people. I call Canada just to talk to someone who loves me and is nice and cares and isn’t in freaking Honolulu. The guy in front of me, old and condescending, tells me to shutup and be quiet. I was really offended because between that homeless dude yammering and the usual bus drone I really wasn’t being loud at all, so I ended my call and fell even further into tired sadness. I got to the airport and got my boarding pass okay and now I am sitting in front of a huge window finally finding some peace and solitude in this wretched city.

Day 92

Well our last full day was definitely a memorable one. We got up and did the usual get ready for breakfast. Then we had bagel Sunday and pastries form Reiner. Our work for the day was to patch up and clean up the chicken coupe just a little more. It was funny to watch Marianna transfer the chickens three at a time in her arms. Pignic has really been pestering Maggie lately, not sure how those pigs will mix. We got off early because it was time for another very old person German get together at Harold’s down at Kee’I. Jeremiah and I spent a good while soaking in the beach for the last time, snorkeling for the last time, getting sun burnt for the last time, etc. you get the point. Then we went to the get together and ate a tone of fabulouso food. There was rice, salad, coleslaw, potato salad, rum cake, rolls, candy, cupcakes, beer, it was delicious. There was accordion and Marianna played the harmonica, there was guitar and ukulele. Doris really enjoyed it and knew all the songs. I don’t know, I’m not doing it justice, but it was a beautiful laid back lovely last day here on rainbow plantation. I still can’t believe its really really over until I get on that airplane, I am so nervous, but I think I can make it to Waikiki on my layover so that should be fun.

Day 91

So its our day off but we really want fresh amazing doughnuts from this place down the road so we head out at 7:15. The place is a good mile and we are tired, it’s a nice morning for a walk though. We are talking about the amazingness to come. I even lugged a bottle full of milk to go with my sugar breakfast. We get there only to see they are only open on weekdays, its Saturday. We walked all that way! So we keep walking and are by the McDonalds and contemplate eating there. I remember that KTA at Keauhou Shopping center has a bakery so we try to figure out where to catch a bus, we then see it pass us. But wait1 The bus always goes up the hill to the hospital and then comes back down not far from where we are. We run all the way to the bottom of the hospital hill, like a good two blocks, and get on the bus just as we reach the corner as the last passengers board, good fortune follows us through a lot of today. So everything feels different in the morning, we see Hawai’i in a new light. We get to the Shopping center and first look at the Saturday market to see if any of the baked goods there will tempt, nope. So we go to KTA and get a ridiculous amount of doughnuts and pastries, which they don’t sell by the dozen here. Jeremiah wants something a little more then cakes so we grab some veggie omelet and hash browns from the L&L Hawaiian BBQ and commence our feast. Its delicious in the kind of way that you love but feel instantly sick after. After that we go to Long’s and get airplane snacks, which ended up being a ton of candy, so I resolve to myself I will crack macadamia nuts when we get home. We catch the bus home and then pack up to go to Kee’i. We are not even at our usual spot to hitchhike, just walking toward it with our thumbs out and we get an instant ride in the back of a truck, absolutely no wait or trouble, fabulous! The beach is hot and sunny for a bit, we nap and swim. We got there at like 11am and by 1pm we call it a day, we’ve done so much already! So we just get off the beach, barely walk out and we get another instant ride back up, nice ride in the back of a truck that has a rug in the bed, very cozy : ) We come home and eat lunch, play with piggy, crack a meager portion of mac nuts to bring home and eat on the way there. I realize now we should have started cracking like a week ago we could have a ton! We just didn’t think about it and now I feel real stupid. Now we are watching TV and waiting to go to bed before a work day for the last time, oh man, this is serious, like we are leaving!

Day 90

So today me and Jeremiah spent time in a dark nasty place we never thought we would, the abandon chicken coupe. It was really gross and I got ants places you don’t want to think about. We did accomplish our mission of covering all the holes, we have to move those birds because ridding the place of poop every morning is too much work. We found out that Doris will be the only Wwoofer for a month when we leave, I feel so bad leaving things high and dry here. So after the chicken cage, oh we got banana pancakes for breakfast, anyway after the cage we painted a little and headed out for Aloha cafĂ©. It was delicious and then we had dessert. Jeremiah got brownie encrusted cheesecake and I got a coffee bar thing. After our bellies were full and happy we head down to the main drag, Ali’I, to the open market to see if any tacky souvenirs were ones we just had to come home with. The finality of our trip is really hitting. Like we were down there and I knew it was my last time for a while, or forever, who knows. We used the bathroom at Bumba Gump shrimp and took our pictures at the funny Forest Gump bench. Um, hmm I can’t recall what else in town. So anyhow we came home and showed Doris how to feed the animals. Pignic is now in her big arena with Maggie and loves to sprint back and forth. She has so much energy and is so happy and free. She loves to roll around in her little kiddie poool, she especially loves doing her business in the water too for some reason.

Day 89

First i wanna give a shout out to my home girl Alana who be skyping me, yeah!

So today I taught Doris how to make breakfast and clean a room and she learns super fast, I feel good leaving things to her. Jeremiah and I had the project of a lifetime, well the week. We fortified Maggie’s big pen to be baby Pignic friendly. This involved hauling and building a lot of lava rock walls. We put up rails, moved her in. it was a great hot and sweaty all day project. Jeremiah even worked with his shirt off for the first time ever, he’s just not usually that kind of guy but we worked so hard. So after work we showed Marianna our hard work and she was happy with it. I was famished and ate and am still eating a ton.

Day 88

Painted and successfully finished Riener’s porch, yay! The two guests we had went fishing early, so we got to sleep in an extra fifteen minutes, fabulous. Um the n after work we went to magic sands which is nice again and had a good old time. Our new Wwoofer Doris is an old German lady but has the body of a tan fit 20 year old, god I swear European women age so well its infuriating. Anyway she’s pretty cool and interesting, definitely the best since Eva and Sabine. Its crazy we’ve been through five Wwoofers since we’ve been here and it will end up at six, kind of cool to get to meet so many people, even if they weren’t always too cool. Also the bus, the 2:15 we usually take that is usually pretty empty, got so full there became standing room only, felt kind of claustrophobic. Um so yeah we have a new lady and time is flying by with ease.

Day 87

Today we painted the porch and whatnot, cleaned a room , cleaned the room for the new Wwoofer coming, blah blah. We pretty much waited around all evening for Marianna to bring the new German girl Wwoofer. They finally got here and it was not a girl, an old lady. She seems nice though, but man Marianna sure can pick’em. So she made us amazing burritos because I don’t know she was gonna be gone that evening, it was a good dinner. Also the last people who stayed in the Kona-Ali’I condo left a ton of food. They stayed one week and left loaves of bread, tons of cereal, eggs, its nice to get all these little extras, oh a big bottle of Malibu rum. I can’t believe how rich and wasteful people are.

Day 86

Today I finally printed out our ticket plane flight confirmations; such a load of my mind to finally get that done. For work we painted the deck all day, which was quite nice and easy, listening to some good new music play lists I just made up. Um so yeah things have been really nice and relaxed and fun with just the four of us on the farm. We are like their children and get to hang out all the time and joke and eat together, its really nice. After work me and Jeremiah did a bad bad Chevron junk food run, we’re going to make pad tai for dinner, mmm. So after dinner there was this really annoying pheasant up in the tree in front of our trailer and I started chucking mac nuts at it, then Jeremiah climbed down from his tree and joined me, we never got the sucker, but it was fun.

Day 85

We watched most of the Oscars. The first female director in the eighty-two year history of the awards won, for best director. The sky tinkled just a little, but not enough. I worked my little booty off cleaning rooms. It was very close to the end of the work day and I just needed to vacuum the crow’s nest. So I plug in one vacuum and it doesn’t work, then I try another outlet, still no suction. I knew one vacuum Marianna said was on the fritz so I go haul it back and haul a different one. This one doesn’t work either, I’ve had problems with its on/off switch lately. So I tell Marianna and she reluctantly lets me use hers, I haul that one all the to the crows nest, it doesn’t work. I try the lights, they don’t work. Aha! So then I recall earlier I was making a bed and my little bum knocked over a lamp, there was a spark but it didn’t break, after that I didn’t try to turn it on. So it was me, not the vacuums. I went under the house found the breaker box and sure enough it was off, not on, I had tripped the power. I feel like my whole day was stupid little things like this. Like five seconds after I set down the roll of trash liners I spent five minutes looking for it, it was on a window sill, feel so crazy sometimes.

And now presenting a guest appearance by Jeremiah Mulder:

Hello humble admirers. Today, Reiner and I were in the truck going to a garage sale and he says, “You see that nice house up there. A few years ago this guy shot his wife right in the face. Yeah, she was [crude verb meaning having relations ending in -ing] everyone around here. Yeah, one day he walked into her room while she was sleeping and unloaded his old six-shot revolver up and down her body, shot her 18 times, and no one heard anything! Can you believe that!? Yeah, then he shut the door and left her body in the bed. The neighbors and friends starting asking the guy where she was and he said she had gone to see her sister on the mainland. Then the neighbors started smelling this dead animal smell, but, you know, that’s normal around here. But the smell didn’t go away. And finally after four months they found her corpse rotting in her bed.” He kept talking but I spaced out thinking about the story. When I started to listen again Reiner was telling me all the stages of a decomposing corpse! Then we bought a washer and dryer.

Day 84

This was our second to last day off. Ten days until I am standing at PDX, whoa! So we reluctantly got up early to feed the animals. Even though it’s our sleep in day I felt bad leaving everything to our hosts for the day. So after that we went back to bed for a while. Jeremiah wanted to see a movie in a dark theater on a beautiful day, one of our precious last few, and I wanted to go to the beach. So we took a bus and went our separate ways. Just wanted some sun so I went to Magic Sands and it was a little magical and a little sandier then the last few times we went there, definitely going to make it a usual thing in my final, hours? Okay so yeah just played in the water, read, oh while waiting for the bus I found out a dear friend, Ariel, had her baby! She named her Ahraya Hope Taylor, A ray of hope, way cute I love it. So I had been alone on the beach a while and decided if I had to kill time while Jeremiah was at the movie I would rather see the sights. I paid a dollar for the trolley and went the full route and back to get to the theater. It was nice to soak it all in and watch people, the bustling tourists of downtown. I grabbed some Subway and waited for another bus that was supposed to arrive at 2:40 Jeremiah was in the movie until like 3:05 and it still hadn’t come, boy was he lucky it was a late bus. So on the way home we had evil bus driver from hell (we have trouble with her all the time, made us late too Hilo, talks down to retarded handicap people, and many other inhuman acts). Today she kept yelling some indiscernible crap about people messing with the windows and making threats to kick everyone off the bus. Everyone is so quiet and well behaved around her cause she is so mean for no reason. So we are en route to home and she pulls over in the middle of nowhere and stops and has a cigarette! I want to report her, she has to get fired, she is so terrible. We got home and Marianna made the most amazing bread and we cook half a pizza from Rachel’s goodbye party, and she had made rice. It’s like no food, then manna from heaven around here. I feel like I’ve had a long busy day and this evening we just watched TV.

Day 83

Wow so ten days left here, just feels surreal, clichĂ© way to describe crazy events in your life, but true. Today was the start of it being just me and Jeremiah for a few days. I cleaned rooms, did a lot of laundry. Everything is very relaxed and fun. Reiner said he would give me one-hundred dollars if I could drink a full stein of beer in half and hour. I’ve seen some of the ones form his collection and they hold maybe two or three bottles of beer, not bad. Then he shows me his fathers five-liter beer stein, I politely declined. Um so yeah not much today. It was soooo hot and clear out and as soon as I stop working the clouds roll in. if this is how its going to be all spring I’m glad I’m getting out : )

Friday, March 5, 2010

Day 82

Um hmm today the usual work, watched a lot of tv. We are gonna have a going away dinner for Rachel. Solei and batman killed a chicken in the laundry room today it kind of freaked me out. I did a ton of laundry. Rachel braided mariannas hair its pretty interesting and cool I guess.

oh my gorsh i am almost done with this blog. I bet i'll have some strange psychological damage when i get back, an uncontrollable urge to blog about everyday, nah, i'll be glad its over.

Day 81

Guess who’s back! Jeremiahs sickness! Yup he has a sore throat and puss again, so he didn’t work today and went to the doctor and got enough penicillin to get us through our stay here, I can’t believe it, its awful. Through our stay here, we only have twelve days left! I am freaking out! And so scared about doing the long trip home alone : ( So Rachel had her day off and I worked my butt off cleaning rooms. No tips but everyone left lots of food so that’s always cool. Then I sat and watched TV for three hours and web surfed it up for about one hour, ridiculous eh? So I randomly found out via web that Brittany Murphy died of pneumonia around Christmas. What celebrity didn’t die last year, geez! I always thought she was a fun girl who made silly fun movies. Um she was in Clueless, Uptown Girls, 8 Mile, Just Married those sorts of things. I just thought it was sad and crazy, she was only 32. Kind of like Bernie Mac, its like people just disappear. Anyway so today just wasn’t too interesting and kind of stressful. So now off to go eat some of those yummy foods we bought yesterday.

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Day 80

Today we had pancakes for breakfast because we are out of everything and in desperate need of a Costco trip. The waffles were very crispy and hard and chewy, just not good. So we had about five squares left covered with peanut butter and we couldn’t eat them. So Jeremiah tries to sneak away and give them to Maggie before anyone notices. Of course he gets caught red-handed by Marianna and she says “Are you gonna give that to the pig? It’s too fattening”. He comes back to the table with an ashamed and defeated adorable face. It was a pretty humorous failed secret mission. Also Daisy (green parrot) escaped from her cage and was on the front porch. Marianna was really busy so she brought her into the house and just set her in her office. Daisy was fine and all cute messing around the room, but after breakfast there was a big crash. I don’t know what she did but it was kind of funny to have this bird just chilling in the house watching us and reeking havoc. For work I cleaned a room, cleaned the laundry room, and painted. After I was done painting I couldn’t find my flip-flops; they ended up being under an empty feed bag by the porch. Reiner hid them because I sprayed him with the hose this morning, but I know where he hides the squirt gun now so mwa ha ha. He is such an old prankster it’s fun. After work me and Jeremiah decided to go grocery shopping for lack of diet variety lately. We almost went and saw a movie, but the voice of reason talked us down. So pretty awesome all we managed to get food wise with the money we earned yesterday. Its cool how we randomly got $25 and bought food for the last two weeks here. It kind of makes sense though because our meals lately have not been well provided so we sort of inadvertently had our hosts give us the money to buy some good ,not pasta, foods. When we got home we tried to sneak in so Marianna wouldn’t see we bought our own bread and whatnot, we don’t want her to fell bad we bought groceries. As we are sneaking past the house she’s says, “hey guys, don’t even stop and say hi to Pignic”. So we stash our goods on the side of the trail and have a good old playtime with the pig and dogs and birds and Marianna. She filled a little wading pool for Pignic and she loves it but as soon as she gets in it she poops and pees, it’s kind of funny. A good day with random happy moments, but nothing too crazy. It’s annoying because you can never predict if it’ll be a continually sunny afternoon at the beach. Today was hot hot hot and clear clear clear. I kind of kicked myself that I wasn’t at the beach, but maybe tomorrow will follow suit.

Day 79

So today work was blah, after work was blah. A nice boring lazy day. So me and Jeremiah made a cheveron run. Marianna was going to give us five dollars to feed the animals that evening while she was gone cleaing the condo. So after we fed tehm we thoguth we would grab some donuts and soda or whatever. On our way home we get a call from Marianna saying “the horses got out, reiner freaked out and opened the gate to get them and the sheep got out too, just go home grab some carrots and help him out.” So we got the horses pretty easy. The sheep are very skiddish and Batman kept chasing them away but they girls so they followed me and went into the pen. When Jeremiah finally caught Batman after all three of us had chased him several times and cursed his little doggie existence Reiner got the most evil exvited grin’ He gave him a good few spankins for being such a little rat. So pretty much the excitement for today. I felt bad it happened when Marianna was gone she even called and asked if she should come home but I told it was all cool. Reiener even gave us twenty dollars for wrangling the critters back into their arena. So pretty much today we got twenty-five dollars for tending to the animals. After all the chasing and chaos some gusts for the boat showed up and I’m all sweaty and frazzled and Reienr yells from somewhere “Chelsea!” So he needed me to go get some towels for the boat guests because there weren’t any dry ones earlier when I cleaned it and I forgot to put some in there. For such a lazy chill day there was definitely a good hour of non boringness. I swear there’s always something here, something gonna go down, its fun.

Monday, March 1, 2010

Day 78

So today we were so tired, could barely get up, sore from hiking yesterday. It was bagel Sunday but mine was very freezer burnt and tasted gross. For work I cleaned a room and painted. I accidentally walked in on Marianna changing because I was trying to get Batman out of the house, but it wasn’t that big of deal. Reiner also started squirting me with a squirt gun because I always threaten him when I water the plants with the hose, now I have perfect reason to actually attack, yay! Then I went and helped Jeremiah paint the porch. Reiner and Marianna went to the beach to a lunch party at noon so we were the only ones home. We decided to go to the beach and hitched in with a nice couple from Portland Oregon, it’s calling us home! On our walk in we saw our lovely hosts at Harold’s (a good friend who lives at Kee’I) eating, we waved hello and went to the beach. It was hot hot hot and the ocean was refreshing, but eventually the clouds covered the sun and we started walking back. So we always pass the stone wall which separates the beach access from the people who live there and today we crossed it. Harold must have seen us wave when we went in because he beckoned us to come join as we were headed home. It was so cool. There were a lot of their older friends from new years there and Ackaka ( the guy whose property Sabine (not spelled Sabina as I thought) took us too to get fruit and see the cat). It was good food and then a ukulele, guitar, accordion trio serenaded us. It was so awesome. Akcaka is the epitome of cute old German man. He played the accordion with unabashed gusto and belted those hokey German tunes with a smile. It was so much fun! Then we had our ride home with Marianna and Reiner. It was an unexpected and amazing surprise. I hope the rest of our two weeks here continue this way. So we got home and we’re still hungry and made mac n’ cheese wit two year aged Irish cheese we had gotten earlier in the week, garlic, veggies, and a lovely salad. Marianna also gave me a nice bottle of wine earlier, it was a good dinner. We watched TV and it was a MSNBC marathon on sex trafficking. It was shocking because I accept that yeah in other countries that happens, but this was all about in the United States. The more I learn and see the more I think this horrifying part of the world we live in is a passion of mine. I am disgusted and I feel like I couldn’t be happier with how my life ends up going if it was to stop this. I don’t really see myself in law enforcement, but those seem to be the only people who can really get in and do something. I just, I don’t know, it’s always heavy on my mind. It seems like of all the poverty, hunger, genocide type situations, war, this is the one thing I feel is the worst, and it connects to everything else to. I mean the whole Monsanto monopolizing food and our health is bad, disease, and corrupt government. But I feel free will and ones own future, comfort, sanity, life, is so much bigger. It just makes me sick and angry and I can’t let it go and I always hear more and more about it, But yeah, a good day for sure over all. Oh and me and Rachel are on somewhat civil speaking terms now so that’s good, but she leaves in five days anyway so whatever. Oh there was a whole cheese debacle with the Dutch women who was here last week. I am keeper of the jungle kitchen and she left a bag in the jungle kitchen fridge for two weeks. They had left for several days and come back so I didn’t think it was anyone’s. Luckily I had put it in our fridge until I was sure, and good thing because she really needed, wanted it to give to someone. I felt bad for meddling with guests’ stuff and worried I would be looked down on and to blame. Marianna and Reiner were both on my side though and said yeah that’s crazy, how long did she think se could keep that here without being here as a guest, so all was okay.

Day 77 – Tsunami Saturday

All right so I heard what I thought was a malfunctioning fire alarm. The fire station is up the road and all. It was a loud humming and then after about ten minutes its when down with a whooooo. Okay so that started at like 6am. Then Jeremiah gets a text from Lauren around 8:30 telling us what’s up. So yeah there was an 8.8 earthquake in Chile and a tsunami of impending doom could be headed for Hawaii. So we go up to the house and the news is on and we’re all exited and talking. Jeremiah and I had no idea what we were going to do on our day off and now we do, let’s go watch it! There was a nice German couple that had breakfast late with us and we told them we were going on this trail to check it out. They asked Jeremiah where it was and I said just come with us. So me and the girl (Sandra) and Jeremiah and the guy (frank) walked in pairs down the captain cook trail to a good viewpoint where you could see a lot of the coastline. They are a really fun awesome couple. They were friends for six years before they started dating. I don’t know, it was cool to just instantly click with people, even if they don’t speak good English. So we get to our look out spot and have 11am tsunami party beers, cheers! Oh we got banan pancakes this morning too, awesome! So we wait, and wait and wait. Nothing happens and we head back up. We are all a lot less chatty on the way up. It was nice to be miserable and out of shape with people in the same boat. The trail sucked but didn’t kick my butt as bad as it did the first time, yay! So we get home and are starving. We end up taking the bus to get some foodies. I had super nachos and Jeremiah had L&L which instantly made him feel sick, I had a major headache, we couldn’t wait to get home. Happily though the table we sat at to eat was next to a table of adorable Japanese tourist girls. We get home and see the little pig on the driveway again. Then we go home and hang out with Pignic for a while. She is so sweet. So yeah that was our exciting day, no big waves, nice fun new people though.
